The family behind USRA Travels
Notes from Magoroto Forest, Mikumi National Park, and the Maasai Boma — the areas we know best, because we went there first as a family.
We found this lake by accident — a wrong turn on a coffee-buying trip that turned into an overnight, then an annual one. The canoe is still borrowed from the same lodge caretaker; our kids learned to paddle on this water years before Magoroto ever became an itinerary. Some mornings we still hike up to Irente to look back down at the whole crater from above, just to remember why we keep coming back.

Years of returning to the same stretch of floodplain taught us where the elephant herds move at dawn, and when to just switch off the engine and wait. Our own kids grew up counting these herds from the back seat — old enough now to spot a matriarch by her ear notches before the guide does. It's still the safari we'd choose for ourselves on a free weekend.

We work with the same Maasai family at every boma visit — the same household that welcomed us, awkward and Swahili-poor, on our very first afternoon there. Our children were raised alongside theirs on these visits, trading beadwork lessons for football on the dirt outside the fence. Every guest we bring gets that same unscripted welcome, not a rehearsed one.
